Bambike: Appreciating History through Bamboo Bikes

Bambike: Appreciating History through Bamboo Bikes

I have been aware of Bambike for a number of years already. And my interest in biking while traveling became more apparent when I bought my first bike back in 2014.

A few Sundays ago, my friends and I joined a Bambike Ecotour around Intramuros together with foreign visitors. For those of you not familiar with Bambike, it is a Social Enterprise which focuses on creating sustainable livelihood for the local community. Bambike partners with Gawad Kalinga which is an NGO (non-profit organization).

While giving travelers a refreshing way to discover Manila, Bambike gives back to the community at the same time while sharing stories of the past to local and foreign visitors alike. Some of their projects include school feeding programs and teacher sponsorship. Bambike is also looking towards building a bamboo nursery program to ensure a steady supply of raw materials

I often look out for businesses which either promote certain causes like sustainable tourism or creating livelihood for the local community. And after our Bambike tour, not only I have refreshed my memory on Philippine history, but I also felt good knowing that we were helping in supporting social enterprises such as this.

I was curious at first if there was a difference between a normal bike and a Bambike. Surprisingly, I found riding a Bambike really awesome. It was light and was made to be heavy duty. Bambikes are handmade so it easy to imagine all the care and patience given to each bike. I wonder though how riding a Mountain Bambike would feel like. 🙂
